The first licensed winery in Thesprotia, since 2006, in the village of Dafni near Filiates, at the foot of Mount Farmakovouni. A family winery across two generations: Spyros Markatselis planted the first vines in 1992, and today the winery is run by the oenologist Alexandros Markatselis.
What the wine tour includes
- A walk through the vineyards, at 100 to 300 metres above sea level.
- A look at the cellar, the stainless steel tanks and the bottling area.
- A tasting at the winery.
Wine tours run from spring to autumn, by appointment. Book through markatseliswinery.gr or the winery’s Instagram.
The wines
- The Shepherd (white and red): a tribute to the area’s herding tradition and to Mount Farmakovouni.
- Two Generations: a trilogy of Assyrtiko with Muscat of Alexandria, Chardonnay with Malvasia Aromatica, and Merlot with Syrah.
Thirteen Greek and international varieties grow in the vineyards.
Markatselis Wine Shop in Igoumenitsa
If you cannot make it up to the village, the winery has a wine shop and wine bar in Igoumenitsa. In the morning it works as a wine shop with tastings, and in the afternoon as a wine bar, with the winery’s labels and boards of cheese and cured meats. See @markatselis.wine.shop on Instagram.
Before you go
- Book an appointment before your visit.
- Dafni is next to Foiniki: combine the visit with Lontza or the Folklore Museum.
- If you are driving, taste in moderation.
