Φρέσκα ψητά ψάρια και θαλασσινά στο εστιατόριο Θάλαττα Θάλαττα στην Πλαταριά Θεσπρωτίας

A family-run fish taverna right on Plataria beach, between Igoumenitsa and Sivota — with a name taken from one of the oldest stories in Greek literature.

Why it’s called Thalatta Thalatta

Around 400 BC, some ten thousand Greek soldiers were marching home through hostile mountains, after a failed campaign deep inside the Persian Empire. Xenophon, who led part of the retreat, tells what happened when the front of the column reached the top of Mount Theches and caught sight of the Black Sea. A shout went up and rolled back along the line: “Thalatta! Thalatta!” — “The sea! The sea!”

For them, the sea meant the way home. The taverna borrowed the cry for its name, and on a summer evening in Plataria, with the Ionian a few steps from your table, it is easy to see why.

Plataria: the quiet bay between Igoumenitsa and Sivota

Plataria is a small seaside village at the head of a sheltered bay, about 12 km south of Igoumenitsa on the coast road to Sivota. It is calmer than Sivota or Parga: a long beach, a harbour used by charter yachts, a few waterfront tavernas and views across the water towards Corfu.

One local explanation for the name is an old plane tree (platanos in Greek), part of which still stands in the village; another links it to the flat land around the bay.

Make a day of it: swim at Elia Beach, Kokkinos Vrachos or Gata Beach, then come back to the village for dinner.

First impressions

Thalatta Thalatta sits right on the Plataria beachfront. The tables are a few metres from the sand, so lunch comes with the sound of the water and dinner with the sunset.

The taverna opened in 2023 and is run by Nikolaos (Nikos) Pambollas and his family. The feel is relaxed and unfussy — a family place rather than a scene.

What’s on the menu — and where it comes from

According to the taverna, its fish comes from local fishermen and from the Poseidon fishmonger in Igoumenitsa, and its meat from a local butcher. The team also says that around 80% of the starters are made in-house.

The menu is open about what is frozen: frozen items are marked with an asterisk. Salads are dressed with olive oil; fried dishes are cooked in sunflower oil.

  • Starters: tzatziki, fava, taramosalata, courgette fritters (kolokithokeftedes) and other meze made that morning.
  • Fish and seafood: the fish of the day, simply grilled or fried so the taste comes through.
  • Grilled meat: local meat with home-made fries.
  • Pasta and pizza: for anyone at the table who doesn’t want fish.
  • Also: salads, desserts, coffee, beer, wine and spirits.

What visitors say

In public reviews on Google and Tripadvisor, the same points come up again and again: fresh fish, friendly and professional service, plenty of vegetarian choices and the sunset from the beachfront tables. Some reviewers say they drove over from Sivota just for dinner.

The flip side of that popularity: on peak summer evenings the taverna fills up, so booking ahead is the easiest way to avoid a wait.
